PASS OVER
by Antoinette Nwandu
Winner of Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Award, Outstanding Production Ensemble, Outstanding Performance by an Actor, and Distinguished Production of a Play at Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival 2020
Inspired in part by the murder of Trayvon Martin and the trial that followed, Pass Over follows two black men, Kitch and Moses, who are stuck on a purgatorial street corner. Epic in its historical scope, Pass Over shares similar stylistic tones with Waiting for Godot–but the absurdities are life and death. In the face of racism, apathy (embodied by the character Mister) and police brutality (embodied by the character Ossifer) Kitch and Moses dare to dream and dare to hope. Even though the stakes of getting off of the corner are high, Antoinette Nwandu offers a portrait of two young black men who also dare to joy.
